MTSS Monday: Building a Proactive System with Responsive Supports for the Unexpected
Today, many across Kentucky and neighboring states are navigating the impact of catastrophic flooding. My heart is with the students, families, educators, and communities affected by this disaster.
Even with a strong prevention system in place, emergencies and crises still happen. That’s not a failure of the system — it’s a reminder of why we need both proactive prevention and responsive care.
MTSS isn’t just about stopping problems before they start. It’s also about being ready to respond — with compassion, coordination, and support — when life throws the unexpected our way.
Disasters like this remind us that schools are more than just places of learning. They’re places of refuge, stability, and connection — especially during crisis.
When proactive systems are strong, we’re better positioned to respond with clarity instead of chaos, and care instead of confusion. That’s the power of a layered system that supports both students and staff, no matter what.
If you’re reflecting on how to strengthen your crisis response within an MTSS framework, this resource may be helpful:

Take a moment to reflect:
💭 How ready is your system to respond with care when the unexpected happens?
💭 What proactive practices in your school or district help create calm during chaos?
➡️ I’d love to hear any strategies or resources that have helped your community navigate crisis situations — let’s share and support each other.
Even small, intentional steps matter — especially on the hardest days.
