MTSS Monday: Is Your Schedule Supporting Student Success?
Did you know that one of the biggest barriers to effective MTSS isn’t the intervention itself—it’s the schedule? At the secondary level, competing demands for course credits, electives, and extracurriculars often make intervention time difficult to prioritize. In all schools, if interventions aren’t strategically scheduled, some students may miss out on vital support, or teachers may lack the dedicated time for collaboration and preparation, which can hinder the effectiveness of MTSS.
Ask yourself:
✅ Do students have a built-in time for enrichments and interventions, like WIN time or flex periods?
✅ Do students receiving interventions have access to elective courses, CTE, and other engagement opportunities?
✅ Does the schedule allow for flexible grouping and adjusting interventions based on student progress?
✅ Are counselors and schedulers part of MTSS planning to ensure intervention access?
✅ Is there time built into the schedule for teachers to collaborate on instructional strategies and data review?
✅ Are interventions scheduled based on student needs and data, rather than just convenience?
✅ Are intervention periods available for all students who need them, regardless of grade level or program (e.g., ELL, special education, GT, AP students)?
✅ Do teachers and interventionists have enough time to deliver interventions with fidelity?
✅ What else might you and your MTSS Team need to consider?
A well-designed schedule isn’t just about fitting in interventions—it’s about intentionality in how every part of the school day is structured to support student success. It’s about strong Tier 1 instruction, additional supports, enrichments, and interventions—it’s about ensuring all students can access these without barriers.
