Myth: MTSS is just for struggling students.
Fact: MTSS is a proactive, preventative system designed to support all students—not just those who need interventions.
An effective MTSS ensures every student receives high-quality, Tier 1 instruction across academic, social-emotional, and behavioral domains. Additional layers of support are provided in a timely and tailored manner to meet each student’s specific needs. However, to make Tier 1 truly effective, it is essential to also focus on equipping adults—our teachers, leaders, and families—with the resources, tools, and learning opportunities they need to address the diverse needs of students.
From instructional strategies for differentiation to data-informed decision-making tools and evidence-based practices, the foundation of MTSS relies on strong, equitable Tier 1 instruction and supports. When educators and families are empowered with what they need, they can ensure every student is given the opportunity to succeed.
💡Reflecting on your practice: What resources and supports are you providing your staff and families to strengthen Tier 1 instruction? How are you building their capacity to meet the needs of every student?
