MTSS Monday: The Crucial Role of the School Counselor
As we celebrate National School Counselor Week, let’s take a moment to recognize the incredible work school counselors do in supporting students’ academic, social-emotional, behavioral, and mental health needs. Their expertise is essential in an effective Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) Framework.
School counselors are instrumental in creating a well-balanced support system that promotes both student well-being and academic success. Their collaboration with educators and families strengthens the MTSS framework, driving positive outcomes for all learners.
While this is not an exhaustive list, the information below highlights some key ways school counselors support each tier:
🏫 Tier 1: School counselors collaborate with educators to provide universal supports and promote a positive school climate, ensuring every student has access to a strong foundation of mental health and SEL skills.
🏫 👥 Tier 2: School counselors facilitate targeted interventions for students needing additional support, working with small groups or individuals to address academic or behavioral challenges.
🏫 👥 🎯Tier 3: School counselors offer individualized support, crisis intervention, and referrals to outside services when needed.
🔹 Effective leadership in MTSS creates an opportunity for collective leadership, where each member’s expertise is maximized. School counselors are integral, visible, valued, and actively engaged as key decision-makers within the MTSS leadership team.
Thank you, school counselors, for your dedication and impact on the success of every student!
